‘Now is the winter of our Discount Tent,’ says the pre-Christmas sale poster in our local camping shop – a reminder (it always seems to creep up on me at the last minute despite the fact that retailers seem to start preparing us for it in September) that the Big Day is in the offing. So, first and foremost, I would like to wish you the compliments of the season.
In the New Year – but I haven’t fixed a time for it – I am planning to dramatically improve the Power Report. I started it on a whim at the end of the summer and response has been so huge than I now feel I need to take it a bit more seriously. I will be sending out a questionnaire before I make any changes but – in the meantime – if you have any thoughts, I would be extremely pleased to hear from you.
My own Christmas break is going to be spent learning to drive a horse and gig. There is much more to this than meets the eye and a friend has promised to show me the rudiments. I haven’t the land, inclination or money to take this up as a hobby – but I am fascinated to learn more about this ancient form of transport. Apparently driving a coach with four or six horses is almost as complicated as flying a plane. At one point I was thinking of starting an old-fashioned undertakers with staff that wore frock coats and top hats and a horse-drawn hearse. It seems to me that there would be huge demand for this in London and I almost bought such a hearse at an auction in Lincolnshire (where I come from) for £1500 – which has to have been the bargain of the century...Read More

A single, proven method to dramatically improve your memory
Memory is something that many of us have a fixed idea about. You hear people saying ‘I have a good memory’ or ‘my memory isn’t what it was’ as if there was nothing to be done about it. In fact, memory is very like a muscle – if you do the right exercises you can strengthen it considerably.
What’s more, the exercises which strengthen your memory are enjoyable in the same way that – say – playing games or walking or swimming or riding a bike can all be enjoyable. I should also point out that if you do even a modest amount of memory exercise you can dramatically improve your ability to remember people, places, events, faces, facts, words and so forth in the same way that if you do even a modest amount of physical exercise you can dramatically improve your health and life expectancy. How to pay off all your debt – including you mortgage – quickly and easily
The is one simple but incredibly effective step you can take to dramatically increase your wealth. It’s a step, which, for a typical family, could mean anything from £100 to £2,000 or even more, tax-free, to spend or save every month. Interested? All it involves is reviewing your loans – mortgage, bank borrowing, leasing, credit cards and other debts – and re-organising them so that you pay the lowest amount of interest and repayment. This may not sound a very worthwhile activity so let me start with a real-life example.
The Pattersons are in a good financial position with two incomes and plenty of equity in their home. Before taking action their borrowings were as follows:Read More

Why pay retail when you can buy at auction?
For me it is – without question - the triumph of picking up a bargain. For others it is "purely business" - the opportunity for gain. While there are those who simply go for the fun of it - just to watch the spectacle. Whatever our different reasons for attending, auction-goers all know precisely what to expect: massive, sometimes almost unbelievable savings.
Of course, I am not talking about the fancy auctions held by Sotheby's, Christie's and the like. While there are bargains to be had at such venues, the really low prices are to be found elsewhere, in rundown salerooms in small market towns; on site at Ministry of Defence air bases; outside in muddy goods yards; and in the deserted offices of bankrupt companies. It is here, at the poorly-advertised sales, that auction-goers find the biggest savings. Read more

Tax-efficient motoring
This Government obviously dislike motor cars intensely, or so you would think to judge from some of the new ways of taxing cars that Chancellor Gordon Brown has come up with. We’re not sure we’ve quite seen the corresponding increase in Government investment in public transport, but let’s not get political… Nevertheless, for those who know where to look for them, there are still quite a few nifty tax benefits to be had in connection with cars. In this article, the first of a series, we’ll look at claiming VAT back on petrol or diesel in cars for private motoring. Read more

Beginners' guide to making money on eBay. |
| As John Paul Getty, the oil billionaire, once observed the only way to become seriously wealthy is to own your own business. Easy if you are entrepreneurial by nature, less easy if you are not. There is, however, one sort of business that can be set up without much capital and with little or no risk yet which has the potential to turn anyone into a multi-millionaire. A business, furthermore, that doesn’t require experience or specialist skills and which can be started at home on a part-time basis. In fact, all you need to get this business going is access to a computer with a broadband connection and a digital camera. ... Read More

How I became a successful (part-time) import-export agent
When I was invited to sit on the board of Wade World Trade, an educational institution established in 1946 to help entrepreneurs become import/export agents, I thought I would try it out for myself. I have to say that although I am not a natural entrepreneur (I hate anything which smacks of ‘selling’) I have never regretted the decision...Read more.
